This workshop will introduce artists to the ancient Japanese technique of Nerikomi to decorate a ceramic bowl or plate. Nerikomi is a decorative technique that adds color, pattern, and design during the sculpting stage. Artists will be taught how to make a bowl or plate using a slab rolling technique. Artists will then learn how to combine different colored blocks of clay into patterns or images, then slice their pattern into thin strips and inlay directly into their bowl or plate. Detailed instruction will be given on how to make basic patterns, and artists are free to experiment and make their own designs. The class fee includes all materials: 1.5 lbs of clay, tools, glaze, and expert instruction, no ceramics experience needed!
After completing their piece, artists will choose either a satin or matte clear glaze to emphasize the pattern. The studio will handle the rest of the process for you including glazing! Within a few weeks of class, you will be enjoying your new handmade, food-safe artwork!
This adult class is open to youth aged 10-15 with a responsible adult present.
